Daisies lead by two from Mpumalanga at WGSA 72 hole champs
Bertine Strauss and Izel Pieters defied the Cape of Storms today in the first round of the WGSA 72 Hole Teams Championship when they both carded four-over 76 to top the individual leader-board. The event was played in gale force conditions and heavy rain squalls at Langebaan Golf Estate on the banks of the Langebaan lagoon in the Boland.
Capetonians wondered if winter was ever coming as they enjoyed calm and unseasonal warm autumn weather during most of May, but conditions changed overnight and were really atrocious today when breaking 80 was most players’ target.
Gauteng North A (Daisies) top the team leader-board (two of three scores to count – 154) with two of their two players, Kim Williams and Henriëtte Frylinck each one stroke back from the leaders carding 77.
Players really battled in the wind but the top players managed keep their teams in contention. Alana van Greuning’ s 80, paired with Pieters put the newly promoted Mpumalanga team in second place on 156 while Nicole Becker’s 81 and Strauss’s 76 kept their North West team tied third with KwaZulu Natal B on 157.
North West B’s Suné du Plooy carded 78 and young Mae Cornforth playing in her first provincial event signed for 86 to put their team top of the Challenge Trophy B Division on 164, one stroke ahead on Southern Cape B.
The second and third rounds will be played tomorrow, Tuesday – and the conditions are not expected to be much better.
