Daisies expected to present strong challenge at Graceland.
The first round of the WGSA 72 Hole Teams Championship will commences tomorrow at the Mpumalanga highveld’s Gary Player designed Graceland Country Club course. With its undulating greens and strategically placed bunkers, it is a typical links course which will present a good challenge to South Africa’s top women golfers. In addition, the course has been lengthened by almost 400 metres for this tournament.
The holder of the Swiss Teams Trophy, North West is without two top players this year – Bertine Strauss and Bonita Bredenhann. However, Inter-Provincial Trophy holders Gauteng North Daisies, including SA’s top three ranked players, Kim Williams, Connie Chen and Henriëtte Frylinck is expected to present the strongest challenge to the other teams. KZN B was promoted last year and is a welcome addition to the top division.
Three players, Iliska Verwey (Eastern Cape), Gabby de Reuck (Southern Cape ) and Hermine Greyling (Boland), currently on scholarships in the USA, have also returned home to participate in this prestigious and challenging tournament.
The Challenge Trophy will include for the first time a SA Invitational Team pictured above. The players are Kenya’s Bhavi Shah, Swaziland’s Nobuhle Dlamini and Tanzania’s Madina Hussein. WGSA trusts that this will lead to increased interaction with our northern neighbours in the future.
