Daisies bloom in Paarl
The Gauteng North Daisies picked up the Pick n Pay SA Inter-Provincial Championship Trophy for the third consecutive year. The team of Kim Williams, Connie Chen, Eugenie Clack, Henriette Frylinck, Mareli Joubert and Marne Roos have not lost a match in the past three years and are worthy champions.
Earlier in the week, the Daisies also dominated the qualifying stroke play round to win the Jean Tindall Trophy, ahead of rivals North West.
This, the 49th SA Women’s Inter-Provincial and the 12th sponsored by Pick n Pay, was played at Paarl Golf Club with the predicted rain arriving every day (24 ml during the week) to make conditions difficult for the players. The course responded well however and the tournament was completed without having to resort to preferred lies.
The match play began on Wednesday and with victories over Western Province Waves on day one and Gauteng Tigers on day two, the Daisies headed into the final round level pegging with North West.
Winning the morning foursomes, 2 – 1, they only needed three of the afternoon singles to lift the trophy and with wins from Marne Roos, Henriette Frylinck and Kim Williams, the celebrations began.
Section two was won by the KwaZulu Natal team of Tiffany Avern-Taplin, Pam Hayward, Taryn Heyns, Johmari Logtenberg, Claire Minter and Rose Powell. They too won all their matches against the Gauteng Lions, Boland A and Southern Cape Flyers. They had gained promotion to the A Inter-Provincial in 2008 when the event was played on their home turf of Umhlali.
Free State and Northern Cape were victors in the B Inter-Provincial and thus gained promoted to the A Division when the event is played at Irene Country Club in the last week of September 2010. The team, led by Lumien Orton (nee Lausberg), and supported by Merition Sandys, Mischa Lottering and newcomer Anneline Weimann defeated Border, Eastern Cape and Limpopo to achieve their goal of promotion.
Western Province Breakers won Section two of the B Inter-Inter-Provincial in a count-out with Mpumalanga – each with two victories, but with an extra game under their belts, the Breakers won the section.
