Connie one under in Germany
A one under 71 put South African junior Connie Chen tied fourth in the first round of the Harder German Junior Masters being played at Heddesheim Golf Club this week.
Connie teed off in the final group of girls playing with a +5 handicap player from Thailand, Thidapa Suwannapura who has just won the Riverwoods Dutch Junior Open and is leading the field on 68. The other player in the three-ball was Ursa Orehek from Slovenia who is also in the WATC and who scored 70.
Erica Lefson reports fron Hessesheim “Connie is playing superb golf – in fact watching all three girls hit the ball within 20 metres of each other on nearly every fairway – dead centre it was great golf to watch.
“Connie’s putting let her down, three putting the fifth and the sixth where she only had a wedge into the green. Again a three putt on 15 from about 20 ft from the hole. The only off hole was the 12th where the rain came down and they had to wait for the group in from for about 15 minutes – resulted in the only missed fairway of her round.
“Connie scored five birdies – hit the first par five in two to make birdie and drove the fourth par four – missed her eagle putt but made the birdie. The third birdie came at the eighth with a great putt of about six meters. Then birdies at the par five 10th and par four 13th. She was very unlucky to miss her putt on17 for birdie.”
Talia Nel also performed well in her first international tournament.
“She started par, drop, par, birdie and then double dropped on the fifth. Although feeling nervous she played steady golf through the nine turning two over. With another birdie on the 10th and only one drop on the back nine, Talia was very relieved to finish her round 3 over 75. It is a great start for her in her first tournament.
“The third member of the team, Lara Weinstein started well until the third where she put her ball in the rough, had a seven iron out and hooked it into the water. Double drop and then struggled to get back focused on her first nine. She started the back nine well until she hit the 15th – again hooked her drive and had to take drop from her lie and then still not on the green. She triple bogeyed the hole and again not happy with the rest of the nine. Lara is obviously not happy with her round but is resilient and I am sure will come to the party tomorrow.”
