Connie and Kelly score well in Jakarta
Connie Chen carded a 73 in the first round of the Jakarta World Junior Championship being played at the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) Course in Jakarta this week. Other scores were Kelly Erasmus 74, Lara Weinstein 81 and Kirsten Campbell 85.
Erica Lefson reported that the A division is played off the men’s white tees – course playing at 5497m and the B div playing of the ladies tees – 4970 meters. “The course has water on every hole – the lake in the middle and water also on the perimeter – so accuracy is of the essence. There was a huge thunderstorm last night and the course was very wet this morning – weather a combination of Durban’s humidity and Joburg’s thunderstorms with temperatures about 37.”
South Africa entered two teams, the first being Connie Chen (A Division) and Kirsten Campbell (B Division) and the second is Lara Weinstein (A Division) and Kelly Erasmus (B Division).
Starting on the 10th, Connie dropped three shots in the first two holes but then settled down to play par golf. With three birdies on the back nine, she drew level after 17 holes but her good drive on the 9th reached the water and she dropped to finish one over par on 73.
Kirsten started on the 1st and birdied the par three 3rd. She then had a few problems with her driver and gave shots back to the course. On the 8th after hitting two shots into the water she ended up with a nine which is what really did the damage on her score card. She ended with 85.
Lara started her day on the 1st and just could not putt – again the greens running at over 11 and about four holes on slopes that cost many of the girls three putts. Kelly passed Lara as she was going to 16 and told her she was only one over – Lara pulled herself together and played the last three holes in one under – her birdie at the 18th.
Kelly started at the 10th and dropped two shots on her 1st two holes. She steadied her game on from there and had a birdie on the 15th to turn one over – played steady golf again on the second nine and dropped her other shot in the par four 5th.
