Christiaan on track in Amateur

Of the 7 South Africans that got through to the top 32, only 3 managed to progress through the first round of match play.By the end of the day, Christiaan Basson of the Western Province remained as the only South African in the SA Amateur Championship side of the matchplay being played at the De Zalze Golf Club.

Branden Grace, the SANLAM SA Amateur Stroke Play Champion, got off to a strong start in the match play, disposing of young Keenan Davidse by a margin of 6/5 in the first round. Unfortunately, Branden could not manage to produce the kind of golf that was needed to keep him in the Championship as he went down 2/1 to Scott Jamieson.

In what has truly been an international field, 7 Countries are represented amongst the final 8 players, with Australia being the only country to have more then one player. Countries represented in the final 8 are; Scotland (Scott Jamieson), Argentina (Estanislao Goya), England (Robert Dinwiddie), Wales (Nigel Edwards), South Africa (Christiaan Basson), Australia (Andrew Tampion and Won Joon Lee) and France (Julien Guerreir).

In the Godbold Bowl section of the draw, South Africas hopes rest on 1 of 3 South Africans left in the last 8. Neil Schieteket, Alphius Kelapile and Wesley Worster will be attempting to prevent players from France, Wales, Ireland and England from taking the Godbold Trophy off our shores.

The quarter finals of the two events start tommorrow at 07h00 fro the first and tenth tees respectively.
