Central Gauteng moves clear at Indwe Senior IPT

Central Gauteng moved to the top of the log and staked their claim for a second successive INDWE SA Senior Amateur Inter-Provincial title with two decisive victories in Wednesday’s second round at De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate.

Central Gauteng has dominated the country’s largest senior amateur team championship in the last decade and is on track to claim their eighth victory since 2005.

The defending champions mowed down Eastern Province in convincing fashion to win 10.5 – 1.5 and thumped Mpumalanga 8.5 – 3.5.

Ettienne Durant, Colin Hayward, Alan Fraser, Tim Hewan and Jock Wellington delivered winning performances in the singles matches of both games to take Central’s tally to eight points.

Meanwhile Western Province also remain undefeated after downing KwaZulu-Natal 8.5 – 3.5. The hosts are in second place on the log, just two points behind Central Gauteng.

Province has a slight edge in games points (29.5 – 23) over Gauteng North, who downed Ekurhuleni 8.5 – 3.5 and defeated North West Province 7.5 – 4.5.

While Mpumalanga celebrated their first success after beating Eastern Province 7 – 5, Ekurhuleni suffered another defeat after North West clinched their game 6.5 – 5.5.

SUPER SENIORS

While their senior A-side will go into the third round hunting the frontrunners, the Western Province Super Seniors continued their dominance in the A-Division.

Looking for their fourth win in a row, the Province team thumped KwaZulu-Natal 4.5 – 1.5.

The team scored a clean sweep in the foursomes, while Ivan Palframan and Herman September won both their singles. Jonathan Hobday halved his match against Poenie Holm to keep KZN from gaining a full point.

Pete Smith scored KZN’s one point when he defeated debutant Mark Hair at the final hole.

In the other matches, Ekurhuleni defeated North West 4 – 2, while Gauteng North and Central Gauteng drew 3-all.
