Central Gauteng continue dominant form
Central Gauteng had another good win in the fourth round of the South African Challenge Cup being played at the Metropolitan Golf Club in Cape Town and in so doing entrenched their dominant position at the top of the log.
Thursday’s games were all limited to eight singles matches as a result of nearly four hours of play being lost to thick mist that hung over the golf course in the morning.
Nonetheless Central Gauteng ruthlessly disposed of the Presidents Team winning six singles matches and halving two. With the four points allocated to the morning foursomes being split equally between the two teams the result ended as being recorded as 9 points to 3.
Now having won all four of their matches to date, Central Gauteng occupy the top position on the log with 8 points, two clear of both the SA Junior and Gauteng North teams. They take on Gauteng North on Friday. Even if they don’t win this match a haul of around 5 points could be enough to see them win the tournament.
Other matches played on Thursday were SA Juniors against an SA Universities team. The younger players won five singles to the students three. The final result was recorded as a win of 7 points to 5 as a result of sharing the foursomes match points for the abandoned morning round.
Gaugeng North dominated in their match against host union Western Province, the result being recorded as 8 points to 4.
The SA Junior team play the Presidents Team on Friday and are expected to record a comfortable victory. A handsome victory could be enough to spring a surprise on Central Gauteng and steel their thunder should the current log leaders stumble against Gauteng North on Friday.
