Central and Province renew rivalry at Indwe Senior IPT

It was not surprising to see Western Province and Central Gauteng top the Senior A-Section log after action wrapped up in the first round of the 26th edition of the INDWE SA Senior Amateur Inter-Provincial at De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate.

The hosts had promised the defending champions a first-class fight for this year’s title and on day one, Province most certainly delivered.

The side scored a near-white wash against both their first round opponents, thrashing Mpumalanga 11 – 1 and handing Ekurhuleni a convincing 10 – 2.

Province moved to the top of the log with four points, but the side will need a few more victories before they can breathe easily.

Central Gauteng launched their title defence with a 7.5 – 4.5 win over KwaZulu-Natal and a 10 – 2 victory against North West Province. Gunning for their eighth victory in the last decade, the side lags just 3.5 game points behind Province.

Gauteng North came out in winning fashion, too, and defeated Eastern Province 7 – 5, while KwaZulu-Natal scored an 8 – 4 win over North West and Ekurhuleni beat Mpumalanga by the same margin.

SUPER SENIORS

In the Super Senior A-Division, though, Province scored a clean sweep to get their title run going.

Undefeated for the last three years, the over-60 team won both their foursomes matches against North West and scored four comprehensive victories in the singles for a 6-0 victory.

Jonathan Hobday beat Jannie Venter 2 & 1, Ivan Palframan defeated Hannes Botha 5 & 3, Mark Hair downed Basil King 6 & 5 and Herman September put the nail in North West’s coffin with a 2 & 1 win over Shadrack Molefe.

Ekurhuleni drew 3-all with Central Gauteng, while KwaZulu-Natal defeated Gauteng North 3.5 – 2.5.
