Carrie Park wins at Zwartkop CC

Young Korean Carrie Park won the Gauteng North Junior Championship by four strokes from Western Province’s Sammy Barber when the event was played at Zwartkop Country Club on Sunday 22 January.

She is seen here with Dot van Ryneveld and WGSA Vice-President Karen Olivant.

The third junior championship of 2012 attracted a field of 50 players, 39 of whom were in the nine and under championship division. Most of these players also attended the HPC training camp in Pretoria, organised by Karen Olivant and included training by WGSA National Coach, Val Holland and physiotherapist Sandra Winter.

Playing conditions at Zwartkop were extremely hot and the last players only just managed to finish when the siren sounded for the lightening which had delayed the finish of the cricket in Johannesburg.

Carrie Park (142) and Sammy Barber (146) both carded a two-under 70s in the morning but Carrie’s level par 72 to Sammy’s 76 in the afternoon round gave the Korean the championship by four strokes. The low round if the day came from Magda Kruger who signed for three under 69 on her home course in the afternoon. She finished in third position on 147 (78,69), with WP’s Kelly Erasmus fourth on 148 (73, 75) and Boland’s Bianca Lohbauer fifth on 149 (75, 74).
