Cara Gorlei wins the Gus Ackerman Trophy
Milnerton teenager Cara Gorlei won the 54-hole Gus Ackerman Stroke Play Trophy at Westlake Golf Club on Sunday after a two-hole play-off against WP team-mate Kelly Erasmus. Both players were tied on 12-over 288 after the final round.
Gorlei felt that she had blown her chances after carding a second round 80 to trail three shots off the lead.
It was consistent driving and finding the fairways which enabled her to shoot the lowest round of the day, one-over-par 73 to fight her way back.
Cape Town’s South-Easter wind at its’ strongest – 45kms – blew many of the players out of contention, including overnight leader Bonita Bredenhan who dropped six shots in the first four holes in her final round.
Defending champion, Monique Smit was third on a total 231 (75, 77,79), with Henriette Frylinck, two shots behind on 233 (75, 78, 80) followed by Michelle Leigh, 225 (76, 79, 80) and Izel Pieters 236 (78,74,84).
Western Province, captain, Vanessa Smith finished in eighth position 237 (78, 81, 78).
Milnerton had another winner as Jeandre Visagie won the Raymond Ackerman Trophy with Steenberg’s Ashleigh Mills winning the Pevsner Trophy.
