Canon SA Disabled Golf Open Restructured

Owing to the current global climate and ensuring we adhere to COVID-19 protocols, the Canon South Africa Disabled Golf Open has been restructured to feature a series of four regional opens which will culminate in a Champion of Champions event.

Promising to still bring you an exciting sporting event, the South Africa Disabled Golf Association (SADGA) Board of Directors have re-structured the tournament framework in 2021 – four regional opens taking place in Cape Town, Durban, Gauteng and Port Elizabeth will form part of the Canon Open Series before 12 players compete in the Champion of Champions event.

While this is a departure from the 54-hole tournament model of years past, SADGA Executive Director, Craig Moorgas, said the Board of Directors felt the restructure was the most sensible decision given the fluid nature of the pandemic.

“The safety of all involved in the event is our primary concern and we decided against having 120-plus players, chaperones, caddies and staff congregate for a week of golf,” said Moorgas.

“We believe that hosting five smaller-scale events is the most sensible course of action given how fluid the Covid-19 situation continues to be in South Africa. Furthermore, smaller fields will help us execute Golf RSA’s Covid-19 Risk Mitigation Protocol more effectively.”

Moorgas said the organisers are hopeful that the restructure will receive the endorsement of all the competitors.

“We as organisers are eagerly anticipating the regional opens and the Champion of Champions event and are confident that this exciting new restructure will be well-received by all competitors.”

Moorgas concluded by saying that while the events will be on a smaller scale, the high-quality organisation for which the Canon SA Disabled Golf open is renowned, will remain.

“Lily Reich and her team are fantastic at what they do, and they’ll make every effort to ensure that each of the events maintain the high organisational standard for which the Canon SA Disabled Golf Open is renowned.” Moorgas concluded.
