Boshoff bags MCB Indian Ocean Open title

South Africa’s Paul Boshoff completed a wire-to-wire victory at the Heritage Golf Club to lift the MCB Indian Ocean Amateur Golf Open title in Mauritius on Sunday.

Boshoff opened with an even-par 72 to take a three shot lead into the second round.

The former Nomads SA Boys U-19 Match Play champion strained his knee in a friendly game of beach football between the South African contingent and the local players on Friday afternoon, but managed to protect pole position with a one over 73 in round two

His advantage was cut to just one stroke by top ranked Indian amateur Veer Ahlawat, who shot to second with a 69, but the 19-year-old South African staved off Ahlawat with a superb 69 in the final round to triumph by six strokes on two under 214.

Ahlawat closed with a 74 to edge out Southern Cape’s Jade Buitendag and Jason Viljoen from Central Gauteng for second place.

Buitendag matched Boshoff’s 69 in the final round, while Viljoen returned a 71.

Matthew Spacey from Central Gauteng closed with a 75 to take fifth on eight over 224, while Gerlou Roux from Western Province registered a 71 to tie for seventh on 229 with Jason Smith from Gauteng North, who posted 72.

Aubrey Beckley from North West rounded out the top 10 on 18 over 234 after closing with a 75.

Top ranked Ludovic Bax from Mauritius carded a 71 to take sixth on 227, while Jaibir Singh from India finished ninth on 17 over after signing off with a 75.

Azelia Meichtry from Switzerland also led from the start.

The top ranked Swiss amateur carded rounds of 68, 69 and 71 to celebrate a 37 stroke victory in the Women’s Competition on two-under-par 214.
