Boon banks EP Stroke Play title
Southern Cape golfer Caylum Boon picked up his first win of the season in the Eastern Province Stroke Play Championship after a sudden-death play-off against Paul Colditz from Western Province on Sunday.
Boon fired rounds of 69 and 68 in a 20-30 km per hour wind at Humewood Golf Club on Saturday to lead the field at seven under. The 19-year-old Oubaai golfer finished two shots clear of Altin van der Merwe from Western Province.
Van der Merwe lagged well off the pace after an opening 74, but vaulted to second with a blistering second round 65.
Colditz trailed Boon by six shots after rounds of 73 and 70, but the Milnerton golfer braved intermittent rain and windy conditions to haul himself into contention with a 68 on Sunday.
Boon closed with a 74 to tie Colditz at five under 211 at the end of regulation play yet, when it mattered most, the KeNako Academy golfer produced the shots that counted.
The pair halved in pars on the first extra trip down the closing hole, but Boon boxed a birdie putt in the second trip down the par four 18th to take the title.
Van der Merwe closed with a 73 to tie for third on four under 212 with Quintin Wilsnach from Mpumalanga, who carded rounds of 69, 73 and 70.
The pair finished one shot clear from local favourite, Allan Lones from Port Elizabeth Golf Club, and Albert Venter from Gauteng North.
