Boland on top against Ekurhuleni
Defending champions and hosts Boland won easily over Ekurhuleni on the third day of the South African Inter Provincial golf tournament at Hermanus Golf Club, finishing the morning foursomes 3-1 ahead.
In a tight match, Rowan du Preez and Dean O’Riley got the only win for Ekurhuleni, needing a putt on the 18th to go one up over Trevor Mahoney and JJ Senekal.
Boland’s young star Keenan Davidse won his fourth match of the tournament so far, teaming up with Hendrik van den Berg to defeat Donavan Shaw and Johan Bekker 3 and 2.
In other A section play, Western Province dominated early against Gauteng North, but eventually finished the foursomes just 2 ½ – 1 ½ ahead. Leon Brink Knoll and Johan Steyn got a win for Gauteng North over Aaron Russell and Werner Theart, while Kenny Goosen and Jan-Carel Nel halved with Justin Turner and Stephen Swanepoel.
It was a match that was going to determine how well Gauteng North does in this tournament, their first against coastal opposition in rainy and windy conditions after comprehensive wins against Free State and Northern Cape and Ekurhuleni. With weather clearing ahead of the afternoon singles play, the Pretoria outfit would have fancied their chances of stopping the Western Province team which has been something of a juggernaut so far.
KwaZulu-Natal kept its position as leaders of the B section after the morning foursomes, defeating Border 3-1. Conrad Gordon-Grant and Wynand Scholtz got the only win for Border with a 4 and 2 victory over Tom Lovett and Cobus Oosthuizen.
The lead put KwaZulu-Natal in a good position over Eastern Province, who shared the lead with them after the second day, as Mpumalanga held the Eastern Cape team to 2-2 in the foursomes.
Limpopo and North West Province shared the spoils 2-2 ahead of the afternoon singles.
