Boland girls top the Gauteng North Junior Championship leaderboard

Devonvale Golf Club’s Olivia le Roux carded a two under par 71 to win the shortened Gauteng North Junior Championships played at Wingate Park yesterday. When the siren sounded for the lightning delay (which turned out to be the end of the event) she was level par after 27 holes.

Fellow Bolander, Bianca Theron carded level par 73 to finish runner-up, with Sammy Barber 77 (Western Province) and Kim Daniels 77 (Eastern Cape) in 3rd and 4th positions. Pictured above from the left are Bianca Theron, Olivia le Roux, Kim Daniels and Sammy Barber

WGSA Vice-President Cynthia Rayner reported that the second Sport & Recreation SA sponsored junior training camp took place in Pretoria over the week-end, with 21 girls participating, including 14 flying to OR Tambo from Western Province, Boland, KZN, Eastern Cape, Border and Free State.

“Girls that had not had a biokinetic and fitness assessment at the previous camp were tested at the High Performance Centre, Pretoria. A group session by one of the sports psychologists at HPC gave the girls much food for thought.

“WGSA national coach, Val Holland, and fitness expert/physiotherapist, Sandra Winter, then spent the day with the girls, starting early on Saturday morning in the HPC gym and continuing with their programme at Wingate Park Country Club.

“The girls were due to participate in the 36 hole Gauteng North Junior Championships on Sunday, which was reduced to 18 holes after lightning disrupted play followed by a torrential downpour. The top four spots after 18 holes were taken by training camp girls. All the girls felt that they had benefited immensely from the experience, particularly the day spent with Val and Sandra, and the out-of-town girls certainly used the opportunity to earn points from the third junior WGSA Junior Order of Merit event in 2011.”
