Boland, Free State with early control at Katberg

The Boland Seniors are in the driver’s seat in the standings at the halfway mark of the SA Senior B-Division Inter-Provincial Tournament at Katberg Hotel & Eco Golf Estate; credit GolfRSA.

10 April 2019 – Free State made a bold move as Boland strengthened their bid for promotion in the Senior Division, while a three-way clash for glory is on the cards between Border, Ekurhuleni and Eastern Province in the Super Senior Division in the South African Senior B-Division Inter-Provincial Tournament at Katberg Hotel & Eco Golf Estate.

SENIORS
Boland kept their bid for promotion on track, beating Northern Cape 8 – 4 for successive victories in this year’s tournament, while Free State dealt Ekurhuleni’s campaign to return to the A-Division a heavy blow.

The Free State team led the foursomes 3 – 1 and stretched their advantage to an 8 – 4 victory.

Johnny Barnard (3&2), Jaco Froneman (3&1) and Hannes Spies (2&1) – playing at eight, seven and six respectively – put Free State into an attacking position.

Their early efforts was well supported by Francois Bezuidenhout (1-up) and Jannie Schutte (1-up), who sealed the team’s success.

Boland and Northern Cape went into the afternoon session drawn 2-all.

Spearheaded by number one Francois le Roux, it didn’t take long for the Boland players to take control in the singles.

Le Roux beat Francois Mulder 7&6 and Andre van Dyk, playing at three, defeated Peppy Blake 6&5 to give Boland the early advantage and Dirk van der Merwe (5&4), Franz Lohbauer (5&3), George Bezuidenhout (3&2) and Paul Baatjies (2&1) stepped it up to secure two more points for the side.

Boland leads the log standings with four points, while Free State’s first win moved them into second.

SUPER SENIORS
Just half a games point separate log leaders Border and second-placed Ekurhuleni after round two action wrapped up with positive results for both teams.

Border defeated Northern Cape 4.5 – 1.5 to move into the number one position on four points and 8.5 game points. Ekurhuleni downed North West by the same 3 point margin to move into second in the standings.

Eastern Province, who drew 3-all with Free State, sit in third place on three points.

The log leaders will face Free State in round four, Ekurhuleni take on Northern Cape and Eastern Province will go points hunting against North West on Thursday.
