Blaauw leads in Glacier SA Amateur final

Nigel Edwards feeling the heatDURBAN (7 March 2008) – Boland’s Jacques Blaauw is still well on course to claiming the amateur double in the final of the Glacier SA Amateur Championship at Royal Durban Golf Club on Friday.

Blaauw, who won the SA Stroke Play title at Pearl Valley Golf Estates last month, finished the morning’s first 18 holes of the 36-hole final 3up against Welshman Nigel Edwards.

Blaauw started well and was 2up through the first four holes. Edwards, the 2006 SA Amateur champion, reduced that to 1up by winning the fifth hole. But Blaauw won holes nine, ten and 11 to climb to 4up. He remained 4up through 17 holes, before Edwards – who is struggling with a stomach ailment – won the 18th with a birdie after a poor bunker shot from Blaauw.

After the lunch break, the players will go into the final 18 holes to determine this year’s champion.
