Jacques BlaauwJacques Blaauw, the current SA Stroke Play and Glacier SA Amateur Champion, finished 18th, with a 54 hole total of 211, five under par, in the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship (Brabazon Trophy) which concluded yesterday. Blaauw, of Paarl Golf Club, had rounds of 70, 71 and 70.

The event, played at Trevose Golf Club in Cornwall, was won by 24 year old Yorkshireman, Steven Uzzell, with a 19 under par total of 197, four shots clear of the second played player, Benjamin Herbert of France. The winner had rounds of 66, 64 and 67.

The Championship was scheduled to be played over 72 holes, however on Saturday persistent heavy rain resulted in the second round being suspended at 13h20 and subsequently cancelled as the course was water logged and unplayable. Only 16 players had concluded their second rounds. The cut was then made, using first round scores, at 71, one under par, 61 players in total participated in the final 36 holes.

Blaauw was the only South African to make the cut, Derek Ferreira, of Centurion Country Club, being unfortunate to miss by one stroke. He shot a level par 72 in the first round. Trevor Muggeridge, the other South African participating, also missed the cut.
