Blaauw and Ferreira qualify at The Amateur

Jacques BlaauwJacques Blaauw and Derik Ferreira were the only South Africans to survive the difficult weather conditions yesterday and qualify for the match play stage of the 113th Amateur Championship being played at Turnberry on the west coast of Scotland, over the Ailsa and Kintyre courses.

In wet and windy conditions, 22 year old Jacques Blaauw, carded a second round of 75, three over par on Kintyre course, to record a 36 hole total of 146, four over par, tying in tenth place. He now qualifies for the match play stage and a shot at adding the prestigious Amateur Championship trophy to his collection.

The Paarl Golf Club member recently made history by winning both the SA Stroke Play and Glacier SA Amateur champion in the same year on different golf courses.

Englishman Sam Hutsby won the 36 hole Qualifying with a fine round 71, one over par, over the Ailsa course, giving him a 36 hole total of 139, three under par. He finished one shot clear of Irishman Johnathan Caldwell.

Testimony to the treacherous playing conditions was the fact that only one player on each course recorded par or better for his round yesterday. Overnight leader Jesper Kennegard (Sweden) recorded an 89 (nineteen over par) on the Ailsa course, failing to qualify by five shots despite his fine opening round of 66, six under par.

Derek FerreiraDerik Ferreira, 19 year old Centurion Country Club member in Gauteng North, played steadily for his 76, four over par on the Kintyre course, to record a 36 hole 148, six over par. The young Gauteng North player also qualified for the match play stage.

The leading 64 players and ties all go through to the Match Play stage. As it turned out all players on 150, eight over par, qualified, 64 exactly.

Cameron Johnston, 37 year old Milnerton Golf Club member, performed admirably yesterday, scoring 76, over the Kintyre course, four over par. Unfortunately his first round score let him down and he missed the cut by two shots – well one shot until Alex Culverwell, playing in the final group yesterday, recorded a 36 hole total of 150 (72,78) and in so doing knocked 17 players, all on 151, out the match play stage.

Players are now seeded, according to their finishing position in the Qualifying, in the match play, which commences today. Bolander Blaauw is paired against Gareth Shaw (Ireland) who is currently ranked 23rd on the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings.

Ferreira is up against Andrea Pavan (Italy) who finished 3rd in the Qualifying in his match which commences at 12h30, almost half an hour ahead of Blaauw.

All matches are over 18 holes of the Ailsa course, except the final, which will be played over 36 holes.
