Big guns fall at Western Province Amateur

SA number one Tristen Strydom and Western Province Amateur defending champion Gerlou Roux got their marching orders, but the country’s number two ranked Teaghan Gauche held course at Rondebosch Golf Club on Thursday.

Strydom scored an emphatic five stroke victory in the Stroke Play Championship on Wednesday and came through the first round in the Match Play Championship unscathed after defeating Keagan Beyer from Western Province 1-up.

However, the newly minted champion was summarily dispatched by Province’s Michael Sherriff 3 & 1 in round two.

Roux tied for seventh in the Stroke Play Championship and drew Gauteng North’s Philip Kruse in the first round.

In a tightly-fought contest, the Woodhill amateur came up trumps and dispatched Roux at the first hurdle with a 1-up victory. But 2015 South African Stroke Play Championship runner-up Rupert Kaminski ended Kruse’s run in the second round when the Central Gauteng golfer triumphed at the 20th hole.

Meanwhile Gauche built on his Stroke Play runner-up finish to hand fellow Gauteng North golfer Divan Marais a 5 & 4 drubbing and dispatched Chris Wicks from Western Province 2-up to make the quarter-finals.

Central Gauteng’s Darin de Smidt, who led the first round in the Stroke Play Championship, also advanced after defeating Deon Germishuys 1-up in the first round and fellow Central Gauteng player David Meyers 2 & 1 in the second round.

Fellow Central Gauteng golfer Marco Steyn, who led the second and third rounds of the Stroke Play Championship, downed Clayton Mansfield from KwaZulu-Natal 2-up and scored a solid 3 & 2 victory against Province’s Sean Bradley in round two

Andre Nel from Southern Cape knocked out Province’s Carlo O’Reilly 3 & 2 and took another big scalp when he eliminated Province’s Ian Snyman at the 20th hole in the second round.

Werner van Wyk and Louis Taylor complete the quarter-final line-up for Friday.

Van Wyk defeated Theunie Bezuidenhout 2-up and got past Garrick Higgo from Province while fellow Central Gauteng player Taylor won 3 & 2 against Nicholas Fraude from Gauteng North in the first round and eliminated Johannes Frahs from Southern Cape 3 & 2 in the second round.
