Bester takes Ekurhuleni Open Title

Coenie Bester - Mark Burgess Ekurhuleni Open Winner 2008Coenie Bester of Mpumalanga led at the end of every day’s play at the “Mark Burgess” Ekurhuleni Open held at the Ebotse Golf and Country Estate over the weekend.

Coenie opened with a 64 in the first round and only relinquished the lead at the end of the third round to SA Eisenhower Team member Cameron Johnston who has shown tremendous form over the past 6 months. Johnston went into the last round leading by two shots over Coenie Bester and Jake Redman but then a cold putter led to a 75 in the final round and Johnston finished in a tie for 2nd place with Redman on a score of 278 (10 under).

Bester closed with a 68 to win by three shots on a very respectable score of 275 (13 under).

Derik Ferreira once again performed well finishing 4th with North West’s JG Claasens and Dean O’Riley finnishing in 5th and 6th place respectively.

Teenager Yubin Jung finished in a tie for 7th with Louis Calitz and Jacques Blaauw, who played solidly in the last three rounds and who will also be heading off to Australia at the end week with Cameron Johnston and Dylan Frittelli to play in the Eisenhower Trophy (WATC).

This show of form from Johnston and Blaauw bides well for SA’s hopes at the WATC (World Amateur Team Championships) which starts in Adelaide on 16 October.
