Bertine on the come-back trail

Former top-ranked junior Bertine Strauss picked up her first 2011 provincial championship trophy when she recorded a 4/2 win over fast-improving junior Michaela Fletcher at the Border Match Play Championships played this week at East London Golf Club

After being tied runner-up in the stroke play event, Bertine won some tough matches to eventually defeated Michaela in the final. She recorded 3/2 victories over KZN’s Tanica van As and Border stroke play champion, Kim Williams – then went on to defeat her North West foursomes partner Nicole Becker 4/3.

Likewise, 15-year-old Michaela Fletcher, who last year moved from East London to Pietermaritzburg, did not have an easy draw. She beat Mpumalanga’s Alana van Greuning 5/4, Henriëtte Frylinck 2 up and Tiffany Avern-Taplin 2/1 to eventually reach the final when she lost to Bertine Strauss.

The next event on the WGSA Provincial calendar is North West’s Championship to be played at Rustenburg golf club on 7 March. Rustenburg Golf Club is also the venue of the Sanlam SA Women’s Championships from 10 to 15 April.
