South Africa’s top amateurs failed to take the sting out of a home defeat at the Leopard Trophy earlier this year when they lost 11 – 7 to the Scots in a two-day test at Western Gailes Golf Club on Thursday.

For the 11^th time since the All-Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) launched in 1992, a South African women’s amateur team claimed success in Africa’s most prestigious biennial championship on Thursday.
Magda Kruger, Michaela Fletcher and Cara Gorlei showed the same tenacity, commitment and determination as their predecessors to ensure the country’s successful title defence at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi.

The South African team were left with work to do after the first round of a two-day Test against Scotland at the Western Gailes Golf Club near Irvine went the way of the hosts on Wednesday.

The South African team lagged one shot behind Kenya after an opening round 146, however Fletcher’s 73 and a 75 from Gorlei handed the defending champions an eight shot lead over the host nation at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi.

Modderfontein’s Marco Steyn drained an eagle putt at the 18^thhole of the East Course at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington to seal a one-stroke victory in the ProShop Northern Amateur Stroke Play Championship on Monday.

Cara Gorlei was the only player to dip below par on a tough scoring day at the All-Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT), and her superb effort not only launched South Africa’s title defence, but lifted the team within striking distance of first round leaders Kenya on Tuesday.

Pretoria’s Kruger and Fletcher from KwaZulu-Natal are second and third respectively on the current WGSA Senior Rankings, while Gorlei from the Western Province is ranked sixth on the senior standings and second on the junior rankings.

South Africa’s top-ranked amateur, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, weathered tough international competition to claim a top 50 finish at the prestigious St Andrews Links Trophy in Scotland on Sunday.
